It’s the question we get more than any other, sometimes by WhatsApp at midnight: “What’s the best time for a boat trip?”
The honest answer is that the Algarve doesn’t have a bad hour — but it has very different ones. After hundreds of departures from Marina de Lagos, here’s how we’d choose.
The case for sunrise
Our earliest charters leave at 6AM, and they are the best-kept secret on this coast.
The wind hasn’t woken up yet, so the sea is a mirror — the calmest water of the entire day, which matters if anyone on board worries about motion. The light is low and gold, spilling over the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade while the city behind you is still asleep. You’ll be first inside the caves, before any other boat, and the dolphins tend to be more playful in the quiet of early morning.
Sunrise is for photographers, for families with early-rising kids, for anyone who wants the ocean to themselves — and, we’ve learned, for proposals. Something about first light makes people brave.
The case for sunset
Sunset is the opposite mood, and just as good at it. The day’s warmth is still in the air, the cliffs slide from gold to amber to rose, and the whole trip points toward one moment: anchor down, glasses up, sun melting into the Atlantic.
This is the celebration slot — birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons, or simply the last evening of a holiday you don’t want to end. Chilled Vinho Verde or Prosecco is always included; fresh oysters from the farm are the add-on nobody regrets.
The case for the full day
And then there’s the third answer: don’t choose. Our 5 and 7-hour charters give you the whole arc — caves in the morning light, a long swim stop at midday (paddle boards, snorkel gear, life jackets from age 2), lunch on deck or at a beach restaurant, the Benagil Cave if conditions smile, and golden hour on the ride home. One day at sea that feels like a week of holiday.
What about the season?
The Algarve claims around 300 days of sunshine a year, and the boat season is longer than most visitors think. July and August bring the warmest water and the liveliest energy — book early, especially for sunrise and sunset slots. May, June, September and October are the connoisseur months: warm sea, softer light, quieter caves. And winter? On a calm, sunny January day, a private cruise past empty golden cliffs is one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets — just bring a jumper for the ride home.
