Ask anyone what to see in the Algarve and you’ll get two answers: Benagil and Ponta da Piedade. Both are carved by the same ocean, both glow the same impossible gold — and both have a secret in common: the best of them can only be reached by water.
Here’s how we do it from Marina de Lagos, and how to choose between them (spoiler: you don’t have to).
## Ponta da Piedade — the cathedral next door
Ten minutes from the marina, the coastline west of Lagos folds into a maze of arches, pillars and grottos that locals have been naming for generations. This is Ponta da Piedade, and every single one of our tours glides through it — past Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana, into channels where the water is so clear the boat seems to float on air.
What the postcards miss is the sound. Cut the engine inside a grotto and you hear the sea breathing against the rock — an echo that has been playing for a few million years. Morning light is when it performs best: the sun comes in low from the east and sets the walls on fire.
Because it’s so close, Ponta da Piedade fits every tour we run — even the 2-hour sunrise and sunset charters.
## Benagil — the icon
Further east along the coast sits the most photographed hole in the roof of Europe: the Benagil Cave, a dome of golden rock with its own private beach and a skylight the sun pours through at midday.
Benagil is a longer run from Lagos, so it works as an add-on to our half-day (3.5h), 5-hour or full-day (7h) tours, with a €200 fuel supplement for the extra distance. Our honest advice — and we give it to every guest — is to decide on the day, with your skipper, based on the weather and sea conditions. Benagil on a calm day is unforgettable. Benagil on a choppy day is a queue of boats bouncing outside a cave. We’d rather you get the first version.
## Which one should you choose?
If you have 2 hours: Ponta da Piedade, no hesitation — sunrise or sunset, it’s the greatest show closest to Lagos. If you have 5 to 7 hours: do both. Caves in the morning, a swim stop in a quiet bay, Benagil around midday when the skylight does its thing, and the long golden ride home with a glass of chilled Vinho Verde in hand.
And that’s the real advantage of a private boat: there is no fixed route and no schedule but yours. Seven guests maximum, paddle boards and snorkel gear on deck, and a skipper who knows which grotto is empty right now.
